Silvia has found a home!

Silvia who was profiled a couple of weeks ago has found a home which is fantastic! Peanut, the kitty I was going to have as cat of the week last week also found a home which we're all very pleased about, as he was a beautiful sweet cat.

In the last week, there have been 3 cats who've been in the shelter for a while who have found homes. We're always so pleased when these kitties find homes but it's mixed with a hint of sadness as well as I've gotten to know these cats really well, and I always looked forward to spending time with them, particularly Silvia and Peanut.

Today, I'll be taking some photos of Rudy, who was Peanut's cage buddy and putting his profile up in the next day or so, so stay tuned!

Cat of the week - Josie

Oops - a little late this week! It's been very hectic.

This week I'm showcasing Josie, a sweet natured, pretty black and white kitty. She originally came into the shelter with some young kittens who have since found homes, but she is still waiting for someone to adopt her. She's about 16 months old, and has been at the shelter since September 2005 and really deserves to find a loving home. She has short hair and a very smooth coat, and doesn't seem to shed much hair. She enjoys being patted and cuddled, and loves to lie in a comfortable spot and watch everything that's going on.

Josie would be perfect if you already have another pet, as she gets along with all the other cats. She has kept her mothering nature and looks after other kittens who have come into the shelter like they're her own.

At the moment there's only a couple of kittens at the shelter, and they are pretty independent, so Josie seems to have re-discovered her playful side. She adores playing with the younger cats now rather than just looking after them, and has become good friends with another kitty cat Peanut (who I'll be showing next week).

It would be wonderful if someone could find it in their heart to take Josie, and I personally would love to see Peanut go with her so they can continue being friends and playing together.

To meet sweet Josie please come into Palo Alto Animal Services which is located at 3281 East Bayshore Rd, Palo Alto, CA or call (650) 496 5971 for more information.

Cat of the week - Sylvia

This week I'm featuring Sylvia, a gorgeous black cat with big green eyes. She's a little photo shy, and doesn't like the flash, so unfortunately my photos don't do her justice!

She's about 1 1/2 years old and has been at the shelter since September. I know I probably shouldn't have favourites, but sometimes there's just particular cats who you really take a shine to. Sylvia is that cat.

The only reason she's been at the shelter for so long is that she's shy with strangers, and people generally go by first impressions, and don't notice her. She had a habit of hiding under the blanket in her cage. She was also the last cage in the adoption room, so people just wouldn't even know she was there. We've since moved her to the middle of the adoption room and she's "come out of her blanket" a fair bit! She doesn't hide so much when she's in her cage, but when she's in the play cages she still hides in a far corner as soon as she hears footsteps.

She loves being patted through her cage by anyone, and will often stick her paw out through the cage and bat at you if she gets a chance to try and get some attention. In the play cages she loves to be on my lap getting rubbed on the side of her face, and if I'm cleaning out the cage she's always rubbing around my legs waiting for me to sit down again. Once she's had some attention she enjoys playing and having a bit of a run around after the cat toys.

She'll be fantastic company for a household without small children and would be happiest being an indoor cat due to her shy nature.

If you want to visit this beautiful kitty, make sure you spend some time in the play cage with her and let her get used to you. Once she's comfortable with you, you'll see what a sweet natured cat she is.

Cats of the week - Ricky and Lucy

Ricky and Lucy are about 8 years old and have been in the shelter since August. Their owners moved to the UK and unfortunately couldn't take their kitties with them. Ricky and Lucy have been friends for all their lives so they'd be best going as a pair.

Ricky is a big grey boy who likes to sit and watch the world go by. He loves to be patted and brushed, and will reward you with lots of purring and his undying love!

His sister Lucy is a pretty black cat and will let you know when she wants attention! She is a lap cat, who also doesn't mind being brushed, and she also has a playful streak, so if you adopt these guys make sure you have some fun toys for Lucy!

As they have been in the shelter coming on 5 months now, we would really like to find them a good home so they can get more exercise and the attention they deserve.

To meet Ricky and Lucy, please come into Palo Alto Animal Services which is located at 3281 East Bayshore Rd, Palo Alto, CA or call (650) 496 5971 for more information.

A bit about this blog

Hi, I'm Sarah Pollock and I'm a volunteer for Palo Alto Animal Services. I spend 6-8 hours a week in the cat adoption room cleaning litter trays, refilling food bowls, helping members of the public who come in, and most importantly spending time with the cats, playing with them, brushing them and basically giving them the love and attention they would be getting in a good home.

I also spend between 8-12 hours a week on the front desk helping out answering the phones, making appointments for the Spay and Neuter Clinic, collecting pets for owners who've just had their animal desexed, and answering questions of people who drop in.

There are a number of beautiful cats at the shelter who need homes, so my aim is to, through this blog, to advertise the cats who've been in the shelter for a while, tell you a bit about them, and hopefully find a home for them.

If you have any questions about any pets, please contact Palo Alto Animal Services on (650) 496 5971 or leave a comment on my blog.

Happy searching!
